Schlegel Center for Service and Justice

What started with a vanload of students doing service work in rural Kentucky has since grown into a Creighton tradition encompassing thousands of alumni and students. Since 1983, Creighton students have gone on more than 950 Service & Justice Trips!

Please help us continue this tradition and support the many students who have served by making a gift to the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice on Giving Day!

The SCSJ awakens hearts and lives of solidarity to build a more just world. The SCSJ’s work in Omaha — and across the country — forms graduates who are reflective, collaborative, and ready to lead and serve.

The center instills a lifelong concern for the pursuit of justice, giving students the chance to serve locally and nationally through programs like Local Community Engagement, the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice, local Community Orientations and, of course, the Service & Justice Trips.

How your gift will help

Your Giving Day support will impact hundreds of students and thousands of community members by enabling the SCSJ to offer high-impact local and national programs throughout the year. It will also help us offer scholarships, ensuring that all Creighton students can participate, serve, learn and be transformed.

Here's what your gift would mean for the SCSJ:

  • $50 supports transportation for weekly service (transporting 210 students each week!)

  • $175 supports a scholarship for the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice.

  • $300 pays for a scholarship for Service & Justice Trips.

  • $500 pays for background checks for a group of 25 students tutoring children weekly.

  • $750 pays for a group of 25 to participate in a one-day Community Orientation, learning about North Omaha, South Omaha, Refugees in Omaha or Environmental Justice.

  • $1,000 pays for transportation for a Service & Justice Trip group over fall or spring break.

All funds donated through Giving Day will be used at the discretion of the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice.

Forming leaders in the Jesuit tradition

The Schlegel Center for Service and Justice engages students in community service, reflection and action on behalf of justice and sustainability as we form leaders educated in the Jesuit tradition.

Some graduates serve for a year or more with programs such as Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Magis Catholic Teaching Corps or Peace Corps. Others take what they learn from involvement with the SCSJ and integrate service, justice, reflection and Ignatian advocacy into their careers in health care, business and academia.

Each year, hundreds of SCSJ students volunteer thousands of hours to serve and learn in Omaha and beyond.

After just one semester at Creighton, I have loved my time in the SCSJ. The Team Leaders with whom I have interacted have been selfless, responsible, and reflective. I would like to grow in these traits and model them for others.

My time as an English conversation partner with refugees has truly changed my life, and without a doubt, has been the most amazing experience that I have had in college, and really, in my life.
